What is an IOL?
An intraocular lens (or IOL) is a tiny, artificial lens for the eye. It replaces the eye’s natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. The lens bends (refracts) light rays that enter the eye, helping you to see. Your lens should be clear. But if you have a cataract, your lens has become cloudy. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract. Cataract surgery removes this cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear IOL to improve your vision.
IOLs come in different focusing powers, just like prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Your ophthalmologist will measure the length of your eye and the curve of your cornea. These measurements are used to set your IOLs focusing power.
Certain IOLs, called Premium IOLs, are used to replace the natural lens of the eye, correct common vision impairments, and provide more complete visual acuity across multiple distances.

What is Astigmatism?
Most people with cataracts want not only to have clear vision after cataract surgery, but freedom from eyeglasses as well. One thing that can prevent that from happening is residual astigmatism after surgery. Astigmatism is very common before and after cataract surgery. Almost one in three people who are candidates for cataract surgery have at least 1.0 diopter (D) of astigmatism, which is enough to cause noticeably blurred vision without eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of your eyes cornea and/or lens. It may be helpful to think of the eye as being shaped like a basketball. With astigmatism, the eye is shaped more like a football.
What Can Be Done During Cataract Surgery For My Astigmatism?
In the past, intraocular lenses (IOL’s) used in cataract surgery could not correct astigmatism. Thankfully, special intraocular lenses (called Toric IOL’s) have been developed to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery.
Toric intraocular lenses have special markers on the peripheral parts of the lens the enable to surgeon to see the orientation of the astigmatism correction in the lens. These marks are important, since once that the surgeon implants the lens he will need to then rotate the lens and align it to your individual degree of astigmatism.
