What are Oculoplastics anyway?

Plastic surgery often conjures up images of drastic changes to a person’s facial appearance or body shape. But oculoplastics is actually a form of plastic surgery used to reconstruct or restore functionality to areas around the eyes.

Patients suffering from conditions such as droopy eyelids, eyelid malposition, and facial nerve weakness (Bell’s Palsy) can benefit greatly from successful oculoplastic surgery. Oculoplastic procedures may be done on the eyelids, eye sockets, eyebrows, cheeks, tear ducts, face, or forehead.

It is important when having a procedure done on these extremely sensitive and focal areas that you select an experienced, Board-Certified Oculoplastic Surgeon as opposed to an Ophthalmic Surgeon. Oculoplastic Surgeons are ophthalmologists that complete an additional one-to-two-year fellowship, often with training in cosmetic surgery.

While most Oculoplastic Surgeons take great care to improve the cosmetic appearance, most procedures are directly related to eye health and protection, not aesthetics. For example, a surgery to repair droopy eyelids may improve appearance, but the goal is to improve the patient’s field of vision.

When dealing with eyelids that turn in or out, a procedure can return the eyelid to a normal position and restore normal tear production and drainage. Oculoplastics can also provide relief for patients who have experienced an eye trauma or cancer with tumor excision. Eyelid reconstruction can be performed using a variety of tissue flaps and grafts, and of course the patient’s care would depend on the circumstances of the situation.

Takle Eye Group is proud to offer complete comprehensive eye care, from routine eye exams to Oculoplastic Surgery. Dr. Leiv Takle, Jr. is an experienced, Board-Certified Oculoplastic Surgeon, having completed his internship and ophthalmology residency training at the Emory Eye Center in Atlanta.
